Question by DallasBlue: Does anyone know where in Dallas area I can legitimately purchase rx pain meds for…?
I was seriously injured and now live in chronic pain. I cannot afford expensive continuos pain clinics and repetitive procedures. I’ve lost my health insurance and have to pay out of pocket. I can not function or work without pain meds/management. Please help.

You can’t legitimately walk into a store and buy prescription meds without a prescription. But…if you go to the nearest emergency room, they’re obligated to treat you. If you live within Parkland Hospital’s service area, I would go there. They’re supposed to be very good at dealing with chronic pain…and one of my friends, who goes there, doesn’t have money to pay the bills. She still gets appointments.

I know that not having insurance sucks. And having to pay out of pocket sucks. So does sitting in the emergency room, waiting to be treated. But if the ER is the only thing that you can do…well…it’s better than being in pain without any hope.

Another thing to try is getting on disability if the condition is permanent.

Can a vet please give me an opinion about treating head trauma in cats with steroids?

Question by ACM: Can a vet please give me an opinion about treating head trauma in cats with steroids?
My 8-year old cat recently was whacked in the head with a heavy door. At first, she seemed fine, but within 24 hours she was showing signs of neurological problems (loss of balance, head tilt to the right, loss of appetite, etc.) The vet also found what seems to be an abscess at the root of her canine (?) tooth. She prescribed a steroid (prednisolone) to deal with the head injury and an antibiotic (clavamox) to deal with the infection. The cat is doing a little better, now. Still unbalanced, and still has the head tilt, but she’s eating and interacting with us again. Also, her eyes have regained pupillary response and aren’t “ticking” as much.

My question relates to the use of steroids to treat the head trauma. I just read an article that says it’s not a good idea, and that people (and, presumably, pets) are more likely to die within two weeks of being injured than those not treated with steroids. Is this now widely believed? Are we making a potentially lethal mistake?

The steroid is for the infected tooth too. The tooth may actually be causing more of the disorientation than the hit on the head.

I am having symetric joint pain, stiffness and swelling, could this be RA?

Question by : I am having symetric joint pain, stiffness and swelling, could this be RA?
five months ago i started having symetric joint pain in my hands, wrists, knees, and elbows. Along with fatigue, and muscle pain. I never had a sore throat, but had an elevated ASO test of 644. My doctor diagnosed me with rheumatic fever, I was put on some antibiotics, nsaids, and prednisone, and my symptoms seemed to resolve. Two months later my symptoms came back with a vengence, and I am still dealing with them. We have tried the 3 rounds of antibiotics, nsaids, and i’m currently taking 35mg of prednisone daily and have been for over a month. I keep having to increase my prednisone just to keep the pain at a tollerable level. I am having pain in every knuckle joint in both hands, my elbows and knees mainly now. At times i cant even walk around walmart without having to stop and take a break because my knees hurt so bad. This past week my knuckles have started swelling and turning red, and are constanly in pain. My knees and elbows dont visually have redness and swelling like my hands, but they hurt the same. My RF factor test was slightly positive at 15.5, and my ANA was negative. I have an appointment with a rheumatologist in 3 weeks. I believe i have rheumatoid arthritis. Could this be true? Or should i be looking at something else?

The fact that it’s in all joints doesn’t seem to fit the regular pattern of RA. Yet all other factors seem to point in that direction. Remember, a rheumatologist wit diagnose RA, a cardiologist will diagnose endocarditis, and a nephrologist will diagnose nephrogenic systemic fibrosis. keep that in mind.
